Common questions
Photo restoration questions.
Can really damaged photographs be restored?
Many can. Tears, heavy creasing, stains, fading and even missing areas can often be repaired. The result always depends on how much of the original image information remains, which is why we assess every photograph first and tell you honestly what we expect to achieve before any work begins.
Do I need to bring the original photograph in?
No. We can complete the first assessment from a reasonably clear phone photo of the original. If the restoration would benefit from a higher-quality source, we’ll let you know after the assessment and suggest the easiest way to get it to us.
Can you colourise black-and-white photographs?
Yes. We restore the black-and-white photograph first, and you keep that version. A colourised version can be created alongside it, with restrained, natural colour rather than a heavily saturated look.
Can you restore photographs that are torn or missing sections?
Often, yes. How well a missing area can be rebuilt depends on the surrounding image information, and on any other photographs of the same people or place you can share for reference.
Can you enlarge a small photograph?
Yes, where the original contains enough usable detail. We’ll advise the largest print size that will still look good when we assess your photograph.
Can you scan photographs without restoring them?
Yes. Our Scan & Preserve service, from $39, professionally digitises photographs that don’t need major restoration, with cropping, straightening and basic tonal correction included.
Can I bring my photos into the studio?
Yes. You’re welcome to bring your photographs to our Glen Alpine studio. Drop-off is by appointment. Call 1300 907 115 and we’ll arrange a time.
Can I mail photographs to you?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Send us a phone photo first, and after we’ve assessed it we’ll give you safe mailing instructions.
Do you offer printing and framing?
Yes. Restorations can be returned as a professional 8 × 12 inch print for an extra $35, or printed and framed in a standard frame for a further $85. Larger prints and canvases are also available; see our print and enlargement pricing.
How much does restoration cost?
Most individual restoration projects fall between $180 and $240, depending on the condition and complexity of the photograph. We always give you a fixed quote after the free assessment, before any work begins.
